Spiritual Formation

[Homewood’s Spiritual Formation program brings Friends together in spiritual community for deepening of practice and understanding through readings, discussions, meditations, and shared meals. All are welcome to attend. You can either simply drop in to the next session or you can sign up here (especially if you’d like to request childcare)]

The Large Group Gatherings

Open to all. Typically in the evenings on the 3rd Monday of each month. Everyone who is interested joins together for a meal and discussion, rooted in shared worshipful silence. Childcare is available if you submit your request (signup form above) by the Thursday before the Monday meeting (four days’ notice).

The Small Group Gatherings

Small groups of about 4-5 people get assigned at the beginning of a Spiritual Formation term. This is a chance to discuss readings and spiritual journeys more in-depth and intimately. Each group sets their own meeting times. If you were not assigned a small group, simply attend the next large group gathering and ask to be assigned a group — we will find a placement for you at any time you’re ready.

This has not been scheduled yet for 2024, but typically happens in the summer. You do not need to attend this; you can attend any of these meetings without any pre-requisite.

Spiritual Formation w/Baltimore Yearly Meeting

Spiritual Formation at Homewood Friends is a good way to engage with a local spiritual community, what Quakers call their “Monthly Meeting”. But you can also join Friends from the wider region, called Baltimore Yearly Meeting (BYM), which includes parts of Maryland, Virginia, DC, and Pennsylvania. They have Spiritual Formation retreats in May and September at the Claggett Center in Adamstown, MD. To register or get more info visit the BYM Spiritual Formation webpage.

NEXT RETREAT: September 20-22, 2024.

These programs have a financial cost, but scholarships are available through BYM or through our own Homewood Friends scholarship funds (see: “Davis Fund”).
