CHILDREN & YOUTH

CHILDREN’S EDUCATION
First Day School is open to school-aged children (generally kindergarten through 8th grade) each Sunday during the school year. Children begin by joining the adults in the main meeting room for approximately 20 minutes of shared silent worship. Afterward, they gather with the First Day School teacher and a Friendly Adult Presence (a member of our Religious Education committee) for that day’s planned activity.

Each year, our First Day School follows a central theme—recent examples include the Quaker testimonies, Quaker history, Quaker practice, and stories from the New Testament. Weekly lessons may include art, service projects, storytelling, Bible study, and experiential learning rooted in Quaker values.
New families are warmly welcomed. We ask that parents or guardians complete a brief registration form upon joining.

NURSERY CARE
For our youngest children, nursery care is available every Sunday during Meeting for Worship. Families are invited to check in and drop off their children before Meeting begins, and return to pick them up following the rise of Meeting and announcements.

The nursery is a warm, welcoming space staffed by two caring adults—our regular nursery staff member, Chris (who is background checked and approved by our Religious Education committee), and either a Friendly Adult Presence or trained teen staff member. New families are asked to complete a brief registration form when joining us for the first time.

The nursery environment is designed to nurture play, comfort, and connection. Children can enjoy a wide variety of toys, books, paints, dolls, and a dollhouse, all selected to support curiosity and gentle exploration.

Staff in the nursery are available to assist with diapering and bathroom needs as appropriate. Families are also welcome to send their child with any snacks or food they may want or need during their time in the nursery.

Infants and young children are always welcome to remain in the main Meeting for Worship with a parent or guardian if that feels right for your family.

SPECIAL EVENT CHILDCARE
Many of our Homewood programs and events offer childcare during the gathering, often held in the nursery. When childcare is available there will always be two committee-approved adults present (either paid staff members or Friendly Adult volunteers).

Childcare for special events is typically offered based on parent interest and advance request. Be sure to check announcements and look for childcare sign-up forms when registering for events. You’re always welcome to reach out in advance if you’d like to confirm whether childcare will be available.
