On 11/2 Homewood Friends adopted the following minute in support of non-binary and trans people in our Meeting, our community, and beyond.
Homewood Friends Minute on Trans and Nonbinary Support
Homewood Friends rejoice in the presence of trans and nonbinary people in our midst,
that we may embrace the way the Light shines differently through each of us and
thereby deepen our own understanding of ourselves and our roles in the world.
● We recall the critical role that Quaker women took in discerning Friends’ paths,
from the early days through the present. We believe that trans and nonbinary
Friends have a similar unique and important role to fill, though we may have
been slower in finding it.
● Quakers have contributed to righting the historical wrongs of patriarchy. We
recommit ourselves to the hopeful work of seeking justice for people of all
marginalized genders, looking towards the day when women and men and
nonbinary people, cis and trans alike, stand as equals in both spiritual and
worldly life.
● In the atmosphere of the current US administration, which is actively targeting
and scapegoating trans and nonbinary people, we take seriously our commitment
to the trans and nonbinary Friends within our own Meeting. We seek to offer
support and counsel that may help these Friends find the quiet internal peace of
their true selves. In addition, we seek to provide support for medical transition
and/or surgery for those who need it. We are also committed to supporting young
people and children as they come to understand their gender identity and helping
them as they express it in the world.
This minute serves as a launching point for thoughtful, dedicated and multifaceted work
to support and protect all trans and nonbinary people. May we, as a Meeting, listen with
open hearts, advocate for justice, and foster a community that welcomes and embraces
all gender identities.
