Oppose the Creation of a Religious Registry
President-elect Donald Trump wants to create a national religious registry of Muslims in the United States – and we can’t let him. This is a dangerous and irresponsible proposal that runs contrary to our nation’s promise of religious liberty.
Registries like the one proposed have a dark history. Too often, they’re just the beginning of violence and further discrimination. With hate crimes against Muslims and those perceived as Muslims already on the rise, this registry would further entrench Islamophobia in the U.S. We need to stop a religious registry before it takes hold.
Fortunately, we can take productive steps to oppose this proposal. Rep. Suzan DelBene (D-WA) has recently introduced legislation to prohibit the creation or use of a registry based on religious affiliation. This bill reaffirms a basic constitutional right and should be supported by every member in the U.S. House of Representatives.
BACKGROUND No Religious Registry Act (H.R. 6382)
